Home LED Masks: What You Need to Know Before You Buy
Home LED masks are everywhere now.
Some are well-designed therapeutic devices with clearly defined wavelengths, treatment protocols and safety information. Others are inexpensive consumer products marketed with impressive colour displays and broad claims, while giving very little useful information about what the device is actually delivering to the skin.
At Sibu Skin and Beauty, we do not think the number of lights, the number of colours or how bright a mask looks tells you enough to judge its quality.
If you are considering investing in a home LED device, these are the things that actually matter.
What Does LED Light Therapy Do?
LED, or light-emitting diode therapy, uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with biological processes within the skin.
Different wavelengths behave differently and can be selected for different treatment objectives.
This means that “LED” is not one single treatment.
The result depends on factors including:
the wavelength being delivered
the amount of energy reaching the skin
treatment duration
treatment frequency
the condition being targeted
the quality and consistency of the device
A mask simply advertising “LED technology” does not tell you whether it is suitable for the result you are trying to achieve.
Wavelength Matters
Wavelength is measured in nanometres, or nm.
It determines where the light sits within the electromagnetic spectrum and influences how that light interacts with the skin.
For skin-focused LED treatments, three of the most useful wavelengths are red, near-infrared and blue.
Red Light
Red light is commonly used in photobiomodulation to support:
skin repair
collagen-related processes
skin rejuvenation
inflammation management
overall skin quality and resilience
It is widely used in professional skin programmes because it can support cellular processes without resurfacing or damaging the skin.
Near-Infrared Light
Near-infrared, or NIR, sits just beyond the visible red portion of the spectrum.
You cannot see near-infrared light with the naked eye, but it can penetrate more deeply than visible red light.
It may be used to support:
deeper skin recovery
inflammation management
collagen-related activity
healing and tissue repair
overall skin resilience
Because NIR is invisible, you cannot assess whether a device is delivering it simply by looking at how bright the mask appears.
Blue Light
Blue LED is used differently from red and NIR.
Specific blue wavelengths may be useful in acne-focused treatment because of their interaction with acne-associated bacteria and other processes involved in breakout-prone skin.
That does not mean every client with acne automatically needs blue LED.
Blue light should still be used for a clear treatment objective and at an appropriate wavelength and dose.
Why “Seven Colours” Does Not Mean a Better LED Mask
One of the most common marketing approaches for inexpensive home LED masks is to advertise seven colours — sometimes more.
You may see:
red
blue
green
yellow
purple
cyan
white
It can sound more advanced because there appear to be more treatment options.
But more colours do not automatically mean more therapeutic benefit.
A device with three carefully selected and properly specified wavelengths can be far more useful than a mask offering seven colours without meaningful information about wavelength, output or dose.
The important questions are not:
How many colours does it have?
They are:
What exact wavelengths does it produce?
Why are those wavelengths being used?
What irradiance reaches the skin?
What total dose is delivered?
How long is each treatment?
Is there evidence supporting those treatment parameters?
Is the device manufactured and tested to appropriate standards?
The colour display is the easy part.
The treatment parameters are what matter.
Irradiance and Dose Matter Too
Having the correct wavelength is only one part of LED treatment.
You also need to know how much energy is reaching the skin.
Irradiance
Irradiance describes the optical power delivered over an area and is commonly expressed as milliwatts per square centimetre, or mW/cm².
Dose
Dose, or fluence, describes the total amount of energy delivered during the treatment and is commonly expressed in joules per square centimetre.
Dose depends on both output and treatment time.
This matters because two masks can both advertise the same red wavelength while delivering very different amounts of energy.
A higher number is not automatically better either.
Photobiomodulation is dose-dependent. There is an appropriate treatment range, and simply increasing the intensity or leaving a mask on for longer does not necessarily improve the result.
A properly designed device should therefore provide a defined treatment protocol rather than leaving the user to guess.
Why Device Quality Matters
A home LED mask is an electrical device repeatedly delivering light directly to the face and close to the eyes.
That makes device quality important.
Things we look for include:
clearly identified wavelengths
consistent light output
defined treatment programmes
reliable dose information
appropriate electrical and photobiological safety standards
eye-safety instructions
build quality
heat management
manufacturer and supplier traceability
warranty and support
clear contraindications
appropriate Australian regulatory status where applicable
A very cheap marketplace device may work exactly as advertised.
The problem is that it can sometimes be difficult to establish whether the technical specifications, output and safety claims have been independently verified.
When something is being used repeatedly on your face, that uncertainty matters.
What About UV?
Red, near-infrared and appropriately selected blue wavelengths used in LED photobiomodulation are not ultraviolet treatment.
The concern with an unknown LED device is therefore not that every inexpensive mask is secretly a UV lamp.
That would be an inaccurate claim.
The concern is whether you actually know what wavelengths the device is emitting and whether its stated specifications and safety information can be trusted.
The closer we move towards shorter visible wavelengths, the more important it becomes to know what the device is designed to emit rather than relying on a coloured glow and a marketing description.
This is one reason we prefer devices with clearly documented spectral information rather than unknown products where those specifications cannot easily be verified.
Eye Safety Is Important
LED masks are used very close to the eyes.
Different wavelengths and devices may have different eye-safety requirements, so the manufacturer should provide clear instructions.
These may include:
whether the eyes should remain closed
whether protective eyewear should be used
how the mask should fit around the eye area
conditions that may make treatment unsuitable
medication or photosensitivity precautions
Brightness and discomfort are not reliable ways to determine whether light exposure is appropriate for your eyes.
Follow the device-specific safety instructions.
What Does ARTG Inclusion Mean?
In Australia, therapeutic goods that are regulated as medical devices generally need to be included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, or ARTG, unless an exemption applies.
The ARTG is the TGA's public register of therapeutic goods that can legally be supplied in Australia.
It is important to use the terminology correctly.
Rather than describing a device as “TGA approved”, the more accurate wording is that it is included in the ARTG and to identify its classification where relevant.
ARTG inclusion gives useful information about the sponsor, manufacturer, device classification and intended regulatory category. It is not the same thing as the TGA personally recommending one brand over another.
Why We Chose TruDermal Glow
At Sibu Skin and Beauty, we chose TruDermal Glow because we wanted a home LED device that we could understand technically and integrate into a professional treatment plan.
We were not looking for the mask with the most colours.
We wanted clearly specified wavelengths, defined treatment modes, known output, appropriate safety information and Australian regulatory oversight.
TruDermal Glow uses three principal wavelengths:
Blue — 465 nm
Red — 633 nm
Near-infrared — 850 nm
These are used in defined combinations according to the treatment objective. TruDermal also publishes these wavelength specifications in its current product information.
Anti-Acne Mode
Blue 465 nm + Near-Infrared 850 nm
This programme is designed for acne-focused treatment, combining blue light with NIR support.
Acne Repair Mode
Blue 465 nm + Red 633 nm
This programme combines blue and red wavelengths for breakout-prone skin where both acne management and skin recovery are treatment priorities.
Cell Rejuvenation Mode
Red 633 nm + Near-Infrared 850 nm
This is the programme we would typically consider where the objective includes skin rejuvenation, collagen support, inflammation management or recovery.
Each programme runs for a defined 10-minute treatment, rather than asking the user to determine their own exposure time.
The device also provides removable eye protection and is constructed using medical/pharmaceutical-grade silicone according to current TruDermal product information.
TruDermal and the ARTG
TruDermal Pty Ltd's home-use cosmetic phototherapy system is currently listed in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as ARTG 384507, with an active status and a Class IIa medical device classification. The ARTG entry dates from 22 February 2022.
That regulatory status is one of several factors we considered.
It does not mean that ARTG inclusion alone guarantees that the device will be appropriate for every client or every skin concern.
It means we can identify the Australian sponsor, manufacturer and regulatory classification of the device rather than relying solely on consumer marketing claims.
Why Sibu Does Not Recommend LED Based on Price Alone
There are very inexpensive LED masks available online.
Price itself does not tell us whether a device is good or bad.
A lower-cost device may perform appropriately.
A more expensive device is not automatically superior.
What we are cautious about is recommending a device when we cannot confidently determine:
what wavelengths it actually produces
whether the stated irradiance is reliable
the treatment dose
the intended treatment protocol
the relevant safety testing
its eye-safety requirements
who manufactured it
who is responsible for supplying it
what evidence supports its claims
For us, that becomes particularly important because we are not simply selling an electronic skincare accessory.
We may be asking a client to use that device repeatedly as part of an ongoing professional skin programme.
We therefore want to know what we are recommending.
Is More Powerful Better?
No.
This is another area where LED marketing can be misleading.
Higher output does not automatically mean a better treatment.
The biological response to photobiomodulation depends on an appropriate combination of:
wavelength
irradiance
dose
exposure time
treatment frequency
Too little energy may not provide the intended effect.
More energy is not automatically more effective.
This is why we prefer a defined treatment protocol rather than encouraging clients to keep increasing treatment time or frequency in an attempt to accelerate their results.
Home LED Is About Consistency
One of the biggest advantages of home LED is not that it is necessarily “stronger” than an in-clinic treatment.
It is accessibility.
A device at home allows appropriately selected clients to use LED consistently between professional appointments.
Depending on the skin and treatment objective, that can be useful for supporting:
inflammation management
skin recovery
breakout-prone skin
collagen-focused treatment programmes
barrier support
maintenance between clinic treatments
The benefit comes from using the correct device, in the correct way, consistently.
Home LED Does Not Replace Professional Treatment
A home LED mask can be a valuable part of a skin plan.
It is still only one tool.
It does not replace:
professional skin assessment
appropriate medical diagnosis when required
treatment of underlying health conditions
daily sun protection
appropriate skincare
professional procedures when a different or stronger modality is required
For some clients, home LED adds considerable value.
For others, it may not be where we would recommend spending their money.
That is why we prefer to recommend it based on the individual skin rather than treating an LED mask as something everybody needs.
What Should You Look for Before Buying a Home LED Mask?
Before purchasing a device, look for:
clearly stated wavelengths in nanometres
defined treatment modes
irradiance or dose information where available
clear treatment time and frequency
appropriate eye-safety instructions
contraindications and photosensitivity guidance
identifiable manufacturer and supplier
warranty and after-sales support
relevant safety standards
Australian regulatory information where applicable
realistic claims supported by appropriate evidence
Be cautious when the marketing focuses heavily on:
the number of colours
the number of LEDs
dramatic before-and-after claims
vague phrases such as “medical grade”
very high power as the primary selling point
without explaining the actual treatment parameters.
So, Are Cheap LED Masks Unsafe?
Not necessarily.
We would not make that claim without evidence about the individual device.
The more accurate concern is that some inexpensive or unknown products provide limited information about the factors we would want to verify before recommending regular light treatment to a client.
That does not mean price determines safety.
It means transparency, specifications, manufacturing quality, safety information and evidence matter more than price alone.
