Acne Scarring: When the Focus Changes From Clearing to Repair
Acne treatment does not always end when the breakouts stop.
For many clients, the next concern is what the acne leaves behind.
That may include red or brown marks, uneven texture or true acne scarring.
At this stage, the treatment goal changes.
Clearing and Repairing Are Different Phases
When active inflammatory acne is present, the priority is usually to calm inflammation, reduce congestion and prevent new breakouts.
Trying to aggressively treat scars while significant acne is still active is not always appropriate.
Once the skin is more stable, we can begin to focus on the changes left behind.
Not Every Mark Is a Scar
A flat red, pink or brown mark may be post-inflammatory redness or pigmentation.
A true scar involves a structural change in the skin.
Scars may appear:
indented
uneven
tethered
raised
texturally different from the surrounding skin
The distinction matters because pigment and structural scarring respond to different treatments.
When Skin Needling May Become Appropriate
Skin Needling is one of the main treatments we use for suitable post-acne scarring.
It creates controlled micro-injury to stimulate the skin’s natural repair response and collagen remodelling.
This is generally considered once significant active inflammatory acne is controlled.
What About Resurfacing?
Professional resurfacing may also be useful where surface texture, pigmentation or roughness are part of the concern.
The right approach depends on what is creating the unevenness.
A peel may improve superficial texture, while deeper indented scars may require a more regenerative treatment.
Scarring Improves Gradually
Scar treatment is rarely a one-session process.
Collagen remodelling takes time.
Improvement may continue for weeks and months after treatment, and a course is often recommended depending on the depth and type of scarring.
The Treatment Plan Evolves
This is why acne treatment is best viewed as a journey.
The early phase may be about clearing.
The later phase may be about repairing and refining.
At Sibu Skin and Beauty, we reassess the skin as it changes and shift the treatment focus when the time is right.
